Split editor implemented in Eclipse M4 Luna – Solves Bug 8009, one of the highest voted bug in Eclipse platform

The platform team (mainly Eric Moffatt based on previous work from Remy Suen, Tom Schindle and Sopot Cela), finally solved Bug 8009 after approx. 12 years. You can now split your source editor with a shortcut. Ctrl + ‘_’ is split horizontally and Ctrl + ‘{‘ is split vertically

You can split vertical.

Plug-in Development - Test-src-Test-handlers-OpenHandler.java - Eclipse SDK _006

Or you can split horizontal.

Plug-in Development - Test-src-Test-handlers-OpenHandler.java - Eclipse SDK _005

Where are a few open points, which hopefully can be solved for M5. See Bug report for lost focus and Bug report for Sash divider color

I think that is great news and would like to thank all involved parties, especially the users which patient or eagerly waited for this feature in Bug 8009.

  1. Kalmer says:

Finally! “Visual Studio” had this functionality already in the year 1998! It also took a long time to make it in “Eclipse” possible to drag selected text with mouse.
